Construction

Measurement:

The traditional measure of a Florida cow whip is the thong only (plaited portion); the handle is not included in the length.  Pretty simple, if you would like a 10ft. whip that’s what you order.

Each whip is made from #550 or #650 nylon parachute cord (paracord).
Core:  The core of each whip begins with a nylon cord filled with BB’s giving the whip its weight.

Belly: The belly is plaited around the core using a 10 plait or 12 plait depending on the total whip length.

Overlay: The final overlay begins with a 12 or 14 plait again depending on the total whip length and is finished in the traditional tapering twist. All whips are constructed using the standard whipmakers plait.

Unless requested otherwise the final overlay will have the following plait count:

Length 5’-7’ (12 plait)    Length 8’-12’ (14 plait)    Length 14’+ (16 plait)

Additional Features:

The following items are distinct to Allen Whips:

    • The top of the whip is finished with a custom leather boot, helping to protect the whip from rubbing against the inside of the handle.

Depending on your use and preference each whip
is made with the “Fall” of your choice.

    • “Incorporated Fall”: On this option the fall is incorporated into the whip thereby eliminating the end knot.

Incorporated Fall

    • “Replaceable Fall”: On this option the fall is separate from the whip allowing for individual replacement when necessary.

Each fall is approximately 12”-18” long.

Handle: The Whips are attached to a wood handle that connects to the thong in the style unique to Florida cow whips. My standard hard wood handles are 15″ long (12″ handle available by request) and bear my personal brand.

To give your new whip a personalized touch:

Your initials and the year (last 2 digits) can be
stamped into the bottom of the leather boot.

Wax:
Waxing a whip will add some density and help preserve the whip by keeping out moisture. Each person has their own opinion on whether to wax a whip or not. My preference would be to have your whip waxed. However, I leave this up to the customer, and will only wax your whip if specifically requested. Whips that are waxed are dipped in a combination of beeswax and paraffin wax. Please note: If you request your whip be waxed you will notice some wax may melt out in hot weather for a period of time; this is only excess wax due to the dipping process. Take care where you place/store your waxed whip.

Notice: Waxing has a tendency to darken the color(s) and will also bleed/show through white.
